Amon Maritime is a maritime project development company, working with leading technology, commercial, and financial partners, to realize the first ammonia – powered ships.
Ammonia as a marine fuel
Ammonia, NH3, does not contain carbon, and will therefore not release any CO2 into the atmosphere when utilized to generate power. As a zero carbon fuel, ammonia can be produced by combining water, air and renewable energy, and is therefore highly scalable. This is commonly referred to as «green ammonia». Another promising production method is combining natural gas feedstock with carbon capture and storage technology, stopping the carbon separated from the natural gas at the production site, and safely storing it – commonly referred to as «blue ammonia».
Compared to other zero carbon fuels, ammonia is preferable due to the relative ease of storage and handling, cost, low explosivity, scalability and superior volumetric energy density. Key challenges to be overcome by technical barriers and safety measures are high toxicity and corrosivity. Initially, zero carbon ammonia will be offered at a cost premium compared to MGO and other conventional marine fuels. In time, we expect zero carbon ammonia to compete successfully on cost.
Technology
Our fleet will be powered by ammonia, the most promising zero carbon fuel for the future. The ships are designed with a high focus on safety, creating technical and operational barriers to limit the risk to a level similar to conventional ships.
Reciprocating engines will burn ammonia to generate propulsive power, and an exhaust gas aftertreatment system optimized for ammonia will eliminate any byproducts, ensuring that we do not replace CO2 emissions with other harmful pollutants.
Batteries and shore power connection will be included for support, consituting an ammonia-electric hybrid power system, enabling silent maneuvering and cargo operations.

We develop carbon free maritime projects with attractive return on investment, based on our proprietary ammonia-powered concept designs. We take a holistic approach to ship technology, bunkering logistics, business cases and financing.
OFFSHORE
Since 2020 Amon have been developing the next-generation PSV work horse for the Norwegian Continental Shelf, with the customer in focus, collaborating with oil companies to ensure that cargo capacities and operational capabilities are just as future proof as the power technology and emissions reductions. Amon Offshore will build, own and operate a fleet of ammonia-powered supply ships, setting a new standard for North Sea PSVs – while drastically reducing emissions.
SHORT SEA BULK
Together with the Navigare Group and Mosvolds Rederi, we have launched a new, carbon free short sea bulk shipping company, Viridis Bulk Carriers. The company is offering forward looking charterers a carbon free logistics solution for their cargoes. Viridis Bulk Carriers has ambitious plans to become the leading short sea bulk company in Europe.
Ammonia bunkering
To avoid the famous “chicken-and-egg” dilemma and to avoid risk with regards to bunkering infrastructure, we launched Azane Fuel Solutions together with partner ECONNECT Energy. The company will deliver turn-key ammonia bunkering solutions to any port in the world, based on its own proprietary technology.
Ula Ship Management
To build capabilities, scale, strength and quality equal to any large, fully integrated shipowner, Amon Maritime found the optimal long-term and high-quality partner in Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement. Together, the Partners have established the 50/50 joint venture Ula Ship Management, co-located with Amon Maritime in Sandefjord, Norway. The company will manage Amon Maritime vessels and be a new, competitive force in the Norwegian third party management market for complex vessels.

As we have no existing fleet on the water needing protection – there is no innovators dilemma for building a zero emission fleet with scale.
Bunkering Infrastructure Technology
Our bunkering technology company Azane Fuel Solutions develops technology for safe and efficient storage and bunkering of ammonia fuel. Through collaboration across the entire value chain from production to consumption onboard a ship, we help de-risk and commercialize ammonia fuel for ships.
