Amon Gas
ABOUT
Amon Gas
Amon Gas AS was established in 2024 to build, own and operate gas carriers using ammonia as fuel. The vessels will be constructed to meet customer needs for transport of LPG and ammonia, while at the same time using innovative solutions to achieve greenhouse gas reductions exceeding 85% compared to conventional vessels of the same size and type.
Midsize gas carriers are the most common type of vessel transporting ammonia today, and the volumes transported are expected to grow with increased demand for ammonia as an energy carrier. If the ship transports ammonia, it eliminates the “chicken-and-egg” dilemma of making bunkering available—the fuel is already on board as cargo. Because the vessel is already designed to transport ammonia, the relative additional cost in this segment compared to conventional ships will be lower than in most other segments.
The “Amon Gas” new build project involves ammonia-powered gas carriers of the MGC type, with a cargo capacity of 48,000 m³ of LPG/ammonia. The project has been under development since 2019 and has received pre-project support from ENOVA since the fall of 2023. In 2024 the project received 180MNOK funding from ENOVA for construction of two ammonia fueled MGC vessels for delivery in 2027/28.
The planned MGCs will be equipped with both main engine and auxiliary engines/gensets of dual fuel type capable of burning ammonia as fuel and thus significantly reducing tank to wake CO2 emissions. With a dedicated ammonia fuel tank capacity of minimum 1000m3, the endurance on ammonia when transporting LPG will exceed 10 days without bunkering. In ammonia trade, the endurance is unlimited as ammonia from cargo tanks can be used to fill fuel tank(s).
